The Western Region of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., shall annually, offer prospective college-bound students, under the age of 23, with strong academic performance and notable community involvement an Incentive Award in the amount of $500. This award shall be a function of the Western Region Military Scholarship and Academic Incentive Program.

Motivation

The Western Region Military Scholarship and Academic Incentive Program was created in honor of the contributions made by military personnel, veterans and their families to the readiness of military forces, and the safeguarding of peace throughout the world. Although there is an expressed desire for applicants to be affiliated with military service in some way, applicants need not be active duty members of the military to apply. Applicants can be engaged in past or current military service, possess a compelling interest in future military service or possess a strong personal connection to someone who has served in a branch of the military.

Requirements

Applicants must reside within the geographic boundaries of the Western Region of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Applicants must be enrolled, or preparing to enroll, in a full-time undergraduate program of study leading to a bachelor’s degree at an accredited U.S. college or university in the next available Summer or Fall term in the year for which the award is made. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4-point scale and must furnish an official transcript with their application. Applicants presently attending a community or junior-college must be currently enrolled in a program of study allowing them to transfer directly into a four-year program in the next available Summer or Fall term in the year for which the award is made.

No scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing any of the following; 1) an Associate’s degree as their terminal degree, a second Bachelor’s degree, a Graduate or a Professional degree (e.g. JD, MD, MBA, etc.). The scholarship award cannot be deferred for future use and it must be used during the upcoming academic year.

It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure all portions of the application are complete at the time of submission and that the application packet is submitted to the ADDRESSEE identified on the form on or before the submission deadline as specified in the application packet.
Awards will be conferred at the Western Region Convention in the year of the applicant’s selection. Winners must be present to receive their award unless alternative arrangements are made with the Selection Committee prior to the Western Region Convention.

Selection Committee Composition & Timeline

The Western Region Chair of Military Affairs will annually notify all District Directors, in writing, by November 1st of the upcoming award cycle and identify the District Director who shall spearhead the creation of that year’ selection committee. The Western Region Chair of Military Affairs, in coordination with the hosting District Director for the upcoming Western Region Convention, will then ensure that a Selection Committee for the WR Military Scholarship & Academic Incentive Program is established by December 1st of each calendar year. This selection committee shall review applicant scholarship packets and select a winner for the current competition cycle to be awarded at the upcoming Western Region Convention.

The Western Region Chair of Military Affairs in coordination with the hosting District Director of the upcoming Western Region Convention will ensure that scholarship application packets are publicly available, no later than December 25th.

The Selection Committee shall consist of at least three financially active Alpha Brothers from the upcoming Western Region Convention host District, the hosting District Director and the Western Region Chair of Military Affairs.

The Committee will use a Rating Scale of 1-10 to select the best-qualified applicant(s). This Committee may convene in person or through alternate means to formalize their selections and recommendations.

The Western Region Chair of Military Affairs will notify the Scholarship Winner of his/her selection for the award, as well as all logistics relative to time, place and attire for award presentation. The Western Region Military Affairs Committee will absorb the cost of the Military Program breakfast on behalf of the Scholarship Recipient(s) and two family members of their choice.

Application Window

Applicant’s may supply their completed applications beginning as early as December 26th but no later than February 26th in any given calendar year.

Military Scholarship and Achievement Incentive Award Funding
This scholarship award will be funded in various ways, and will comply with all federal guidelines for 501c3 entities:

    • 1. The first Western Region Military Scholarship and Achievement Incentive Award, March 2018 will be funded with a $500 scholarship donation provided by the Western Region Chair of Military Affairs (Bro. Thomas J. Pope, Jr.) This first Western Region Military Scholarship and Achievement and Incentive Award Program was developed and approved under the leadership of the Western Region Vice President: Dondrell Swanson and initiated/presented in the Rocky Mountain District under the leadership of the Rocky Mountain District Director: Willard Bell, Sr.
    • 2. Subsequent year’s funding can be garnered through donations or through residual costs derived from Military Breakfast Programs/Donations. {All WR Alpha Brothers are urged to make an additional tax-deductible donation – online – during the WR Convention registration processes, to the Western Region military scholarship program}. The goal is to increase the number of WR Military Scholarships and Achievement Incentive Awards each year to give to deserving students, preferably African-American males under the age of 23.
    • 3. The Military Chair, based on available funds, will recommend to the Western Region Vice President the number of scholarships to be presented at each Western Region Convention.

Western Region Treasurer’s Responsibility

The Western Region Military Breakfast is a ticketed program and is the preferred venue for the awarding of the scholarships mentioned above. As such, the Western Region Treasurer will develop and maintain a Budget/Finance “Line Item” in the Western Region Treasurer’s Report(s) to track the funding and surpluses for the WR Military Breakfast. The Western Region Vice President, in consultation with the Western Region Chair of Military Affairs, will approve or modify the availability and issuance of funds for each year’s scholarships based on this financial report.

The Western Region Treasurer, in consultation with the Western Region Vice President and Chair of Military Affairs, will coordinate with the Western Region Convention Chair, prior to the release/publication of each year’s Western Region Convention Registration and ensure that Alpha Brothers can register, upfront, for the Convention’s Military Breakfast and to purchase their Military Breakfast tickets on Ticketleap.com/convention during the designated phases of the Western Region Convention Registration process.
